New Delhi: After soaring temperature in Delhi and NCR, the power demand is touching 4,857 MW. So, Delhi's oldest Thermal-based power station at Badarpur ignited its furnaces to generate power. The Badarpur Thermal Power Station (BPTS) was closed from October 17, 2017 to March 15, 2018. With generation of 210 MW unit, it restarted on April 15 and it is contributing 175 MW power to Delhi's requirement, as per a BPTS official.
The Second Unit of 210 MW capacity station is expected to start shortly as all formalities have been completed. The plant's chimney was ignited on Monday. A BPTS spokesperson said that the Delhi government has issued a new schedule to start the plant. It is expected that the plant will be closed before the winter.
In November 2016, the SC directed the government to frame and implement a Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to control air pollution. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified the plan on January 17, 2017.
General Manager of Badarpur Thermal Power Plant Chandan Chakarborty said that the plant always uses an equipment to monitor the environmental parameters. This plant is the best in the country as per environmental norms. But we followed EPCA orders. Chakarborty claimed that to check emission of gases like SO2, NO2, PM 2.5, PM 10, CO2 and Ozone, the power station has installed Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System (AAQMS) at CISF Colony, Additional Township, Guest House at Panchwati. Chakarborty said that Badarpur Power station is 37 years old but it is continuously modernized.
Gases like sulphur and carbon dioxide are dangerous for human being. The Badarpur plant installed continuous Emission Monitoring System ( CEMS) at the Chimney of stage 1 and 2 to monitor the SO2, NO2, Co, Co2, Flue Gas flow.
