Auto driver held for kidnapping, gang-rape of 19-year-old in Sohna

Gurugram: Barely two days after a woman caterer was raped by two men, another gruesome incident occurred in Sohna on Tuesday, where a 19-year-old was gang-raped by five men.
Police said that the victim, who belongs to Aligarh, was waiting for a bus on Tuesday evening to her hometown. Seeing her all alone, an auto driver approached the woman and offered her a lift to Gurugram railway station, which she accepted.
The auto driver, however, took her to Raisina Ridge, where he and four of his friends took turns to rape her. The brutal sexual assault left the woman unconscious. She soon managed to approach the cops an filed a complaint at Sohna police station.
On Thursday evening, police said they arrested the auto driver, while search is on for the other accused.
"The woman was able to mention the registration number of the auto, bearing a Haryana number. We have registered the case under sections 328 (causing hurt by means of poison), 356 (assault) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code," said a police officer.
A day prior to the rape of the teenager, a minor had commited suicide in neighbouring Nuh after she was abducted and gang raped.
The incident occurred late Sunday night, when seven people barged into the house of the minor, who was just two months away from turning 18.
They then took her to a desolate spot where they took turns to rape her. The accused then threatened her not to report the matter. Traumatised by the incident, the minor committed suicide a few hours later by hanging herself.
Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2016 placed Haryana on the top position in terms of gang-rape incidents. The recent incidents in Gurugram, Haryana's richest district, seems to make sure that the state is keen on maintaining the dubious tag.
For a state that has witnessed many brutal gang-rapes, law enforcement officials in Haryana have often highlighted challenges in conviction of criminals.
Officials mention that there is a need to set up fast-track courts, so that the convictions accused in rape cases can be finished at a quicker pace.
