Anaj Mandi fire: Brother-in-law of building owner arrested
New Delhi: The Delhi Police's Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested the brother-in-law of the owner of the Anaj Mandi building, where a massive blaze claimed 43 lives.
Police said that they are conducting raids at various places to nab another accused in the case. The building's owner Rehan and his manager Furkan were arrested on Sunday after the incident. Police had said, during their interrogation, it was learnt that a portion of the building was owned by Rehan's brother-in-law Suhail. He was arrested on Wednesday, police said.
An officer said that the postmortems of all 43 bodies were completed and they were handed over to their relatives. The team from BSES visited the spot on Wednesday to check the electric meters and wiring.
"The CFSL officials also visited the factory today to collect evidence," an officer said.
According to police, they are conducting raids to arrest one Imran. According to the senior officer, the 3D laser scanning of the place of incident was done for third and fourth floors
Police recorded the statement of six more injured persons on Tuesday. A day earlier, they had recorded the statement of 7 injured persons.
During the investigation it was found that the building owner had rented 18 portions in the four-storeyed factory There were four power connections and illegal sub-meters were installed for tenants, an aspect which is being looked into, police said.
The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial probe into the tragedy, the worst fire accident in the national Capital since the 1997 Uphaar cinema blaze that claimed 59 lives, and sought a report within seven days.
Last year, another massive fire ripped through a firecracker storage unit in Bawana that left 17 people, including 10 women, dead.
In the same year, two separate fires in northwest Delhi's Kohat Enclave and Shahdara's Mansarovar Park, claimed five lives, including that of three minors. In April 2018, a fire broke out at a building in Kohat Enclave, killing a couple and their two children. Few days later, a major fire gutted 300 shanties in Shahdara and killed a girl.
