Air quality levels continue to be unhealthy in Ggm

Gurugram: If there was any hope for the residents of Gurugram that quality of air being inhaled by them was better than the day after Diwali it all went into smoke with the thick haze cover over the city.

Showing no improvement in the quality of air continues to be at extremely unhealthy levels with the poisonous particulate matter of 2.5 micros being at 340-350 micrograms per cubic meter recorded by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) from the Vikas Sadan station.

The condition was even worse from the Gwal Pahari station that had PM2.5 hovering up to 370-390 micrograms per cubic meter. The safer limit of PM2.5 as prescribed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) is 60. Longer exposure to air that has high amounts of PM2.5 can cause lung impairments. Besides PM2.5 there was also a high concentration of PM10, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide. Various important roads like the Golf Course Road, Golf Course extension road, and the MG road were sprinkled with water by the workers of the MCG.

To make sure that there was also no pollution caused due to traffic congestion, traffic policemen were also seen managing the traffic at major traffic points.

The district police have been directed for strict vigilance and have been told to penalize the polluting vehicles along with strict enforcement of pollution under control (PUC) norms.

In order to prevent the dust pollution construction activities also in Gurugram from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am have been restricted. The the district administration has selected 47 spots where the pollution is considered to be relatively high as compared to other places. It is estimated that 30 percent of Gurugram pollution is caused due to dust pollution. Besides the closure of the construction activities mechanised sweeping of the roads, a sprinkling of water on the roads and the plans is also to be undertaken by the government agencies.
