New Delhi: Much recommended knee transplant surgery to a large number of patients visiting AIIMS with persistent knee pain is not proving beneficial, either for middle-aged or older people. In a year, AIIMS ortho department conduct around 1,500 knee and hip transplant surgeries in which 25 percent are revision surgeries," said C S Yadav, Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, AIIMS. To address and cut the number of revision surgeries in knee and hip transplants, country's premier hospital is launching 10th AIIMS Cadaver Arthroplasty course on May 6-7 for the aspiring arthroplasty surgeons across the country, professor Yadav added.
The professor further said that for studying the technicalities of total hip and knee joint replacement, experts are using cadaver to teach the surgical procedure. For this session, authorities have allotted ten cadavers, and for transplant surgeries prominent surgeon Biju Peter, El Sayad Morsi and Prakash Chandran would be available to teach around 60 doctors from across the country.
Dr CS Yadav, professor of orthopedics at AIIMS said, "The idea behind this is that the knee and hip joint replacement surgeries have to be done appropriately and are very precise procedure to bring mobility to the patient. In other countries, doctors do have a clear concept. While most of the patients come to us with complaints of dislocation, infection, stiffness and lack of mobility post surgeries. So there is a need of young and experienced arthroplasty surgeons in the country to carry out correct knee and hip replacement surgeries." He also added that it is more difficult to correct the revision cases, so we want to share our best tricks and technique to the budding arthroplasty surgeon with a motto to cut the number of revision surgeries.
During this cadaver arthroplasty course- 2018, we will also emphasise on practical aspect, interactive learning and the problems faced by surgeons," he said. Experts said the quality of cadaver is very important to conduct procedure on it and at AIIMS; bodies are preserved properly so that they look soft and fresh.
"We will use unclaimed dead bodies for learning and at least six doctors can learn on a single body. After the use, all bodies will be properly reconstructed and will proceed for cremation," he said.
