Accused used confident female voice to dupe elderly
New Delhi: A confident female voice, assertive tone and confident assurance by a female on the other side of the phone was enough to lure and dupe a 92-year-old senior citizen from Amar Colony who was asked to deposit a hefty amount in a fraudulently opened bank account. The pretext used was a high incentive on the lapsed insurance policy.
A resident of East of Kailash was picked up by the cheaters to lay the trap. They gave him a call on July 10 and stated that in 2012 he had purchased an insurance policy from HDFC and paid only one installment and also told that the policy is still live and if he deposits Rs 80,000 to HDFC account he will be given Rs 14 lakh as the policy is going to be matured after paying Rs 80,000. The complainant believed the version of the caller and deposited the said amount in the account of the accused.
Once the target deposited the initial amount in the alleged bank account, the accused persons continued to further call him to deposit for higher returns. "Thereafter, Pooja along with her male associate who pretended to be a Senior Executive started demanding Rs 2,40,000 more from the complainant. It is when the complainant got suspicious and lodged the complaint with us," said DCP South-East Delhi Chinmoy Biswal.
The cops then made a team to verify the bank account in which the amount was transferred in Ghaziabad. The account holder address was found to be of Bhopura in Ghaziabad. When the bank called the accused account holder he dodged and did not turn up. Later, the cops verified the photo and the accused Vishal Aggrawal was arrested from DLF colony, Bhopura in Ghaziabad.
During sustained interrogation, accused Vishal Aggarwal disclosed that there are four persons in his gang Pooja, Sumit Rana and Bilal. Sumit and Bilal used to procure data of senior citizens who had lapsed and expired insurance policies and provided data to Vishal Aggarwal. After this, Pooja used to call their targets as insurance company executive and used to lure them of high incentives on their policies. Pooja was arrested from Noida and the rest two are absconding.
