Accused acquainted to victim in 96% rape cases

New Delhi: In almost 96 per cent of rape cases which were registered in 2017, the accused persons were known to the survivor, claimed the data of Delhi Police. Police officials also claimed that involvement of strangers in cases of rape declined.
According to the data, as many as 2,049 rape cases were reported in 2017 and investigation revealed that in 38.99 per cent of these cases, the accused were friends or family friends.
Neighbors were involved in 19.08 per cent of rape cases, while the involvement of relatives was found to be 14.20 per cent.
Employers or coworkers of the victims were involved in 3.86 per cent of the cases, whereas in 20.50 per cent cases other known persons committed the rape.
The data claims that involvement of strangers in rape cases in the city declined from 3.57 per cent in 2016 to 3.37 per cent in 2017.
Proactive initiatives by Delhi Police have contributed towards a reduction in crimes against women, which has shown a healthy downward trend over the years.
Compared to 2016, the figures pertaining to crime against women in 2017 showed a reduction. The data shows that cases of rape reduced by 0.73 per cent, molestation of women by 18.88 per cent and insult to modesty of women by 30.54 per cent.
According to police, measures like informing civic authorities about dark stretches in the city and directing workplaces to ensure safety of women employees while dropping them to their respective residences have helped curb crimes against women.
Police further said that the high solving rate of cases of rape (91.75 per cent) and molestation of women (83.26 per cent) could be achieved in 2017 thanks to systematic and diligent work by each district and emphasis on arrest of the accused in such cases.
Concerted action was also taken against drinking at public places, which often is seen as a precursor to crime against women. 23,094 persons were arrested for this offence in 2017.
