Ruling Aam Aadmi Party workers and supporters in Delhi took to the streets on Wednesday to protest against an “unconstitutional” ordinance “imposed” on the city by the Centre.

AAP workers participated in marches, symbolically burning effigies and the copies of the ordinance across several Assembly constituencies.

Protests are also planned in constituencies of Tilak Nagar, Kirari, Nithari Puliya, Gaurav Nagar, Timarpur, Ghanta Ghar Chowk in Sabzi Mandi, Malkaganj, Kondli Ambedkar Park, Tri Nagar, and E-Block JJ Colony Wazirpur. Each location will be represented by the respective AAP MLAs, who will lead the demonstrations in their constituencies.

Effigies and copies of the ordinance will be burned in every neighbourhood, street, and locality from July 6 to July 13.

The protest raised the demand for the immediate withdrawal of the ordinance, which allegedly infringes upon the constitutional rights of the elected government in Delhi.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has declared that Delhi’s citizens will continue to oppose the ordinance until Prime Minister Narendra Modi responds to their demands and withdraws it.

AAP said the Supreme Court had granted the government of Delhi authority over services related to the transfer and posting of officers. Recognising that denying control over officers hampers effective governance and contradicts the Constitution’s intention, the court ruled that the Kejriwal government should have legislative and executive power in this matter.

However, AAP alleged the Modi government disregarded this decision and introduced the oppressive ordinance merely a week later, effectively stripping the elected government of its powers.

The party claimed the people of Delhi are deeply dissatisfied and angered by this “unjust” ordinance, feeling betrayed by the central government.

AAP had initially planned to hold protests and agitations on July 3, but following the filing of the petition with the Supreme Court, they delayed the programme.
