AAP files complaint against BJP for spreading misinfo on Delhi roads

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for spreading misinformation and violating the Model Code of Conduct. The complaint concerns a video posted by the BJP on social media, which falsely portrayed pothole-ridden roads as being in Delhi. However, it was later revealed that the video actually depicted roads in Faridabad, Haryana.
In the letter to the Election Commission, AAP highlighted the seriousness of the issue, accusing the BJP of misleading the public during the ongoing electoral process. “The party has been spreading misinformation through a false video on their social media channels, showcasing roads in Delhi in a deplorable condition. However, it has been exposed that the road featured in the video is actually located in Faridabad, Haryana,” the letter stated. AAP also attached both the false video and a video exposing the truth, which clearly demonstrated the BJP’s attempt to deceive voters.
The complaint emphasised that this was a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct, which prohibits the spread of false propaganda. AAP urged the Election Commission to take immediate action against the BJP for violating these rules and undermining the integrity of the electoral process. “These acts destroy the sanctity of the election process, and parties committing such offences should be held accountable,” the letter continued.
AAP called for the BJP to be directed to remove the misleading video from all social media platforms immediately. They also requested that the BJP be prosecuted for violating the Model Code of Conduct, with references to Section 123(4) of the Representation of People Act, 1951, Section 340 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act. AAP further urged the Election Commission to ensure the BJP refrains from spreading false information in the future.
As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, this complaint adds to the growing tension between the AAP and BJP, as both parties intensify their campaigns.
