70% hike in cab fares leaves Delhiites fuming

NEW DELHI: In addition to the unforgiving summer in the national Capital, a nearly 70 per cent hike in the rates of cab aggregating services such as Uber and Ola rides has added to the woes of citizens.

The hike is reportedly higher for ride-sharing options in the lower price range, including Uber Pool, Ola Share, Ola Micro, Uber Go and others.

The increasing demand for air-conditioned cabs, as well as the severe hike in petrol and diesel prices, is attributed to be the cause of the cab fare hike.

"The hike in fare was so sudden that I was surprised. However, I take the share rides because in this summer there is no alternative for us.

"The public transport system is not developing and we do not have AC buses in every route," said Sharad Sharma, a corporate employee.

He added that in during peak hours, there is an increase of 90 per cent fare, compounding the problems of the masses.

Adding to his sentiments, Mohit Singh, an advertising professional, said, "There should be a regulation of fare hike. It should not be arbitrary."

Meanwhile, rains in the Capital have so far evaded Delhiites, as the month of June has remained dry so far. Due to persistent dry and hot weather, residents are continuously having to battle weather to reach their workplace.

However, average mercury levels in the Capital have reduced, with the temperature settling from 43 to 38.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

The city usually records a fair amount of rainfall during June, with the maximum temperatures generally being recorded around 38 degree Celsius.

For now, the weather seems to be doing justice to Delhiites, as the rise temperature has not been abnormal. But it is the rains that have seemingly made a U-turn

"A trough is likely to form from Punjab to West Uttar Pradesh across Delhi by tomorrow. In the wake of this, we expect, dust storm and thundershowers to commence once again over Delhi and its surrounding Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad around June 9," said an official of the weather department, adding that short spells of pre-monsoon activities may continue for the next few days, till June 11.

However, these activities are expected during early morning or late afternoon hours and would not be too intense.

"As the activity would be during the late afternoon hours, its effect on the rising temperatures would be less as by that time, the temperatures would have already soared. The normal date for the onset of Monsoon over Delhi is June 28. But as Monsoon arrived over Indian mainland before time this year, Delhi and its adjacent regions may also enjoy arrival of early Monsoon," he said.
