60 public toilets locked after MCG fails to pay contractors

Gurugram: After claiming that all 150 toilets in the city, opened as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, were open, 60 public toilets have now been found to have been locked.
The reason cited for this is the lack of their maintenance, as the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has not paid the contractors assigned for maintenance.
This comes at a time when it was reported that half of the government toilets could not be used by the public as they are locked. Subsequently, MCG officials claimed that all toilets were open for public use.
Shockingly, the state of public toilets being out of reach for citizens are not in far flung areas but in the densely populated and posh localities of the city. Some of these areas are MG Road, Civil Lines, Sector -15 and Gurugram Bus Stand.
For a city looking to improve its rankings in terms of cleanliness, people can still be viewed relieving themselves in posh localities of MG Road and Golf Course Road.
There have also been complaints that lack of toilets is resulting in most of labourers openly defecating in vacant areas especially in Sectors 37, 46, 39, 45 where construction activities are rampant.
While public agencies have been actively promoting the feat achieved by the city of being ODF, its residents do not seem to be impressed by the claims.
