57-year-old held at IGIA for smuggling gold
New Delhi: A 57-year-old man was arrested by customs at IGI airport with gold worth Rs 32 lakh. Investigators claimed that the passenger in the past had smuggled 2,500 grams of gold.
According to customs, the accused, a resident of Vijay Nagar in Delhi, was intercepted by customs officials after he arrived at T-3 at IGI airport from Bangkok.
"As soon as he crossed the green channel the passenger was intercepted. On his search gold rod and one cut piece of gold bar collectively weighing 937 grams were recovered," said Deputy Commissioner of Customs Kalrav Mishra.
He further added that the tariff value of the recovered gold was Rs 32.38 lakh rupees. These items were kept in the pocket of his black colour jacket.
During further investigation, the 57-year-old man admitted that he had smuggled 2,500 grams of gold in his past five visits.
Thus the total value of the offending good comes out to be more than one crore rupees. The recovered gold has been seized under section 110 of customs act.
