40 vehicles crushed, sold at Rs 500 per kg
New Delhi: Around 40 vehicles stolen from parking at four metro stations in Dwarka district were dismantled and sold between Rs 500-1,000 per kg to factories. The following revelation was made during the questioning of three people who were accused of auto-lifting and purchasing of stolen items. The auto-lifters used to sell stolen bikes as scrap at Mayapuri by preparing fake registration certificates with the help of an application available on the internet.
The two auto-lifters identified as Ajay Kumar and Mohammad Sahil used to sell the motorcycles to another accused named Milap Singh (41). "The Jaguar patrolling team arrested Kumar and Sahil near Sector-12 Metro Station on August 16. The receiver of the stolen vehicles, Milap, was nabbed on August 18," said the police officer. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse stated that the duo disclosed about the theft of more than 40 bikes and scooters from the parking areas of Dwarka Sector 10,12, 13 and 14 metro stations and sold them as scraps to Milap Singh of Mayapuri junk market for Rs 3,000 each.
"Milap had the idea that the duo has been selling stolen bikes and scooters as they used to sell two to three vehicles to him in every 3 to 4 days. He used to dismantle the vehicles on the same day and get the scrap compressed for selling it further. The investigator claimed that the vehicles were crushed in a factory and then sold in kilograms. "Milap earned around 500 per kilogram by selling the vehicles to crushing factories," said the police officer.
One of the main reason for the increase in motor vehicle thefts is unmanned parking across the city which is the soft target for auto-lifters. According to the Delhi Police data, in 2017, one of the police stations in Dwarka district received 334 cases of motor vehicle thefts in which around 143 cases were reported from the parking areas of four metro stations in Dwarka. "It is clear that the metro stations parking is the soft target for criminals and auto lifters as it has less security," said police sources.
