30 new areas reported water-logging so far this month, claims Delhi Police
New Delhi: Monsoon in Delhi this year has caused water-logging in over 30 new locations, letters sent by Delhi Police various civic agencies this month have claimed. Additionally, more than 60 places have been found to be repeat offenders of water-logging.
Police officials claimed that by providing diversions in areas affected by water-logging, they are ensuring that chaos does not prevail in the city.
In the first nine days of July, more than five letters were sent by Delhi Traffic Police to municipal agencies about the water-logging in their respective jurisdictions.
Since July 2, over 10 locations – including five new places – reported water-logging.
"A college, a police station in Geeta Colony, ARSD college in Dhaula Kuan, Barapulla Flyover, and Nehru Stadium opposite Gurudwara were some new places where complaints of water-logging were reported," said police, adding that areas in Pankha Road, Ring Road and Lodhi Road are among repeat offenders.
On July 3, three new places reported water-logging, namely Tuglakabad village Lal Kuan and Dr Hedgewar Road. On the same day, repeated complaints were received from Bhajanpura to Wazirabad Khajoori flyover.
On July 4, five places reported water-logging, among which four were repeat offenders, while gates number 5 and 6 at Pragati Maidan saw water-logging for the first time.
Complaints from six places, including two fresh locations, were made to the traffic police on July 14.
Two days later, 25 different locations witnessed water-logging on roads.
On July 19, 20, 21 and 22, heavy water-logging was witnessed in 14 fresh places in the Capital.
In addition to sending letters to various civic agencies over their respective water-logging cases, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Alok Kumar stated they have also briefed traffic staffs on how to handle traffic during rains.
"We have made a detailed operating procedure for traffic personnel for the monsoon. We will also liaison with pump operators and concerned engineers at the time of water-logging, so that the problem solved in quick time," said Kumar.
The senior officer added that most of the complaints, so far, have been reported from areas like Modi Mill flyover, Naraina T-point and Mayapuri flyover.
On many occasions, traffic police personnel also help local commuters when their vehicle break down.
South Delhi Municipal Corporation Mayor Narendra Chawla claimed that to tackle water-logging in the Corporation's areas, the engineering department has been instructed to ask the concerned staff as well as engineers to remain alert.
