25-yr-old charred to death after car crashes into pole, catches fire

A 25-year-old man was burnt to death in Shalimar Garden area under Sahibabad police station on early Wednesday morning after the Hyundai Verna car he was travelling in collided with a pole, overturned and car caught fire.

The deceased was identified as Zaid Khan, a former crew member of a private airline. Khan was travelling to his gym when his car hit an electricity pole. The car turned upside down and, before Khan could get out, it suddenly caught fire.

Only Khan's skeleton was remaining inside the car after the fire was doused.

According to eyewitnesses, the collision made such a loud sound that many residents in nearby apartments woke up. As people came to the spot to rescue the driver, the car burst into flames.

"Passers-by informed us about the incident and a police team rushed to the spot. The car was burnt fully and so was the body of the driver. We called up the fire tenders and managed to douse the fire but there wasn't much left of the victim. Only the bones were left," said Anup Singh, circle officer, Shahibabad.

"The incident took place around 4 am on Wednesday when the speeding car hit the power pole and overturned near Ram Manohar Lohia Park. We could not ascertain whether the car was on the wrong side as it tumbled multiple times. The victim probably went unconscious or could not step outside. The fire engulfed the entire car in seconds and he was charred to death" added Singh.

"Based on the car's registration number, we traced the address of the victim. The family was informed and the body was handed over to them after carrying out the post-mortem. It seems like the car caught fire following a spark near the fuel tank," said police officials.
