'1,500 cases of domestic violence in Gurugram'

Gurugram: According to Gurugram police in 2019, there have been over 1,500 cases of domestic violence that has been reported to the police. Among these the exploitation of women due to insufficient dowry top the list of complaints. These cases are far higher than the combined crimes of rapes 130 and molestation 140 that have been reported in the city this year.

According to Gurugram police officials, women even while informing the police about being physically manhandled by their family do not want to officially register their complaints fearing ostracisation. Moreover, the complaints of domestic violence are not only coming from the financially weak households but also from the rich and affluent families.

"Cases of domestic crimes are definitely one of the major challenges. To begin with we have to make sure that the claims are substantial and not made on flimsy grounds. After that it is important for us

to encourage the women victims to register the crime so that our officials can pursue

the case and bring it to its logical end," said Usha Kundu ACP (Gurugram).
