The win consolidated the Waveriders position at the top with 24 points from seven games, while the Magicians are still in search of their first win in the tournament. The Mumbai outfit has managed to garner just five points from as many games. The Waveriders started the match as clear favourites but took time to get their pieces together. The first quarter was relatively actionless as the two outfits struggled to gain control over the proceedings.
But the Waveriders slowly started to gain their footing in the match and took the lead in the 20th minute through Akashdeep Singh, who found the back of the opposition net with a reverse hit after being fed by Lloyd Norris Jones. Barring just a few tries, the Magicians dominated the third quarter, bringing into action Waveriders custodian Nicolas Jacobi on more than one occasion.
The Magicians finally drew level in the 49th minute through captain Glenn Turner who scored with a rebound after the initial try was kept away by Jacobi. If the first two quarters were drab in terms of performance of both the sides, the second half witnessed an enthralling encounter as both Waveriders and Magicians adopted an attacking approach to outwit the other.
Veteran Prabhjot Singh came very close to give Magicians the lead in the 57th minute but his fine attempt was saved by a brilliant Jacobi.
The Waveriders managed to secure the lone penalty corner of the match in the final quarter but Rupinderpal Singh’s low flick was kept away by Harte.
It took a neat deflection from Walmiki in the 66th minute from a cross from the sideline to secure the winner and full five points for the hosts. The Waveriders will face Uttar Pradesh Wizards in their next match at Lucknow on Saturday.
