Delhi Transco to establish power islands in capital by end May

Delhi Transco Limited’s highly ambitious power island system is expected to take off by end May this year. The proposed scheme will ensure power supplies for essential services like hospitals, rail services, water treatment plants, Delhi Metro and other critical services, said power minister Haroon Yusuf. Islanding scheme envisages isolating power installations from the main grid when fluctuations occur to prevent a collapse. Once these installations are disconnected from the grid, they can be used to re-energise the city’s power generation.

The islanding scheme was proposed after a massive northern grid failure in July, 2012, that affected power supplies in almost the entire northern region for two consecutive days.

‘After the grid collapse on two occasions last year, it was decided that all states will prepare islanding schemes in consultation with the central electricity authority, northern regional power committees and the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited within a three-month period to ensure that implementation can be carried out in the next eight months.’ The project, set up at the cost of Rs 25 crore, is said to have a capacity to manage 3,400 Mega Watt(MW).

Our plan was to make the entire city insulated in case of grid failure.

But due to non-availability of power within the city, we are now trying to ensure that essential services continue to get power in case of a grid failure,’ said a senior official of Delhi Transco ltd.

The four islands that have been identified are the Dadri-Jhajhar-Pragati island, Bawana- CCGT island, BTPS-Pragati island and Rithala-CCGT island.

Transco’s spokesperson Rishi Raj assured the Delhi Transco Limited that the project is on the verge of completion and it would be ready to be implemented in June.

Raj further said that at present power islands are operation in Mumbai and Kolkatta. Delhi has a power capacity  of approximately 1,250 to 1,400 MW, but the requiremtn goes up to 6,000 MW during the summers.

This means that the rest of the power is drawn from the northern grids. Inter-state power conflicts worsen the situation as states have the tendency to overdraw power from other states.
