Delhi to roll out food security scheme today

Delhi is all set to roll out the food security scheme at the Talkatora Stadium on Tuesday, even as the fate of the ambitious Bill remains uncertain.

The Bill could not be taken up for discussion at the Lok Sabha on two consecutive days  last week owing to opposition-led disruptions in the House.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that the Ordinance is sufficient for the scheme to be launched in Delhi. The UPA government had brought in an Ordinance in July to make the food security scheme into a law and had instructed Congress-run states to prepare for the launch of the programme.
Dikshit claimed that in the first round, the food security programme in Delhi will cover 32.5 lakh people.

Dikshit said that the food security scheme will be implemented from September and the government will make available wheat at the rate Rs 2 per kg and rice at the rate of Rs 3 per kg.
The benefit will be passed through the female head of family.
