Delhi to get two drug de-addiction centres

Worried over the rising cases of drug abuse, Delhi government will soon set up two new drug de-addiction centres in the capital. This was announced by the minister of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Kiran Walia on Tuesday after a meeting with Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta who informed her about the rising number of drug addicts in the capital.
Besides Gupta, Walia met secretary [Social Welfare], Sanjiv Kumar, Deputy Director General of Narcotics Bureau, A K Jaiswal and Joint Police Commissioner [Crime], Sandip Goel. Gupta spoke to the minister about the need for opening drug de-addiction centres in the capital. Delhi government will request the DDA for allotment of suitable pieces of land for the establishment of the centres. Till DDA allots the land, the Delhi Urban Shelter Development Board will be requested to immediately allot suitable sites for running these centres, a statement from the government said.
Walia said the government is committed to take necessary measures to curb the menace of drug addiction in the capital by way of opening more drug de-addiction centres. She also said that the total number of 461 beds earmarked for the drug de-addicts in five big hospitals in the capital and NGO-run centres will be increased. Moreover, inspections will be carried out at the centres and new guidelines will be formulated for the NGO-run centres for effective solution of the problem.
