In order to fill up thousands of vacancies for teachers in its schools, the Delhi government has started hiring over 15,000 guest teachers for the current academic session. The government had earlier cancelled the process of the appointment of these teachers in over 1,100 government schools.
The education department of Delhi government usually completes the appointments of guest teachers before the commencement of the academic session on 1 August. But the delay, this time, is being attributed to agitation of guest teachers demanding higher pay and permanent posts.
‘The guest teachers were demanding higher wages and hence the approval from concerned authority was further delayed’, said a senior officer of education department.
The guest teachers have been demanding permanent position for the past several years in vain.
‘The government had appointed us at the age of 30 as teachers. It’s been over 10 years now and we are still not permanent employees.
‘Also, if any vacancy for permanent teachers comes up now, our application will be turned away for being overage,’ said a guest teacher in Delhi government school.
The government appoints guest teachers on yearly basis as permanent recruitment had been stopped for the past 15 years.
