Delhi should pay up Rs 33 crores: BJP

Delhi BJP on Friday opposed the decision to recover Rs 33 crores from the civic bodies spent on conducting elections for the three MCDs and demanded the Delhi Government to meet all the expenses.

Leader of the House in North Delhi Municipal Corporation and BJP leader Yogender Chandolia said Rs 13 crore of the total Rs 33 crore would be recovered from the account of MCD and Rs 20 crore would be forcefully recovered from these local bodies as debt.

'This is in total violation of the provisions of the DMC Act. Besides, Rs 5 crores would be taken per annum from these Corporations for expenditure by Delhi Election Commission. The DMC Act in clear terms had no provision to recover the amount from these Corporations for holding their elections,' he added.

Chandolia said that holding elections to local bodies is the responsibility of the State governments.

'Therefore, all the expenditure by the staff of MCD during the recent elections, which also includes salary during the period, should be paid by the Delhi Government to MCD,' added Chandolia.

The Delhi Government should bear the burden of Rs 33 crores spent on the Municipal Corporation's elections as there is no provision in the DMC Act to impose these burdens on local bodies.
