Delhi has witnessed a three fold increase in cases of Multi-Drug Resistant TB in the last four years with close to 1800 cases in 2012.
As per the figures compiled by the Delhi State Tuberculosis Control Office under Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, cases of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) in Delhi have been steadily increasing.
‘Around 570 patients were diagnosed for MDR-TB in 2009, which rose to 677 in 2011.
‘However, the figure increased to around 1790 patients in 2012.
‘Over 1600 patients have been put on exclusive MDR-TB treatment, which is quite expensive as compared to treatment of drug-sensitive TB - the common form of TB found in our society’, Additional Director (Health)-cum-State TB Control Officer Dr SK Arora said.
World TB Day will be observed on Sunday.
MDR-TB is caused by a bacteria which is resistant to the drugs routinely used to treat common form of TB.
