Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, Delhi Police are leaving no stone unturned and have increased checking of vehicles multifold at the entry and exit points of the city. Apart from this, vigilance has also been increased at all the Metro stations, the parking spaces allotted to them and public places such as markets and malls. More than 40,000 security personnel have been deployed to avert any untoward incident in Delhi in the light of the terror threats received by the intelligence agencies.
Increased frisking and checking of luggage at all the Metro stations on the eve of Republic Day left many commuters fuming since they were left to stand in long queues. However, people lauded the efforts put on by the security forces. Anita, one of the woman constables posted for frisking at the Chandni Chowk Metro station said: “Large number of people use the Metro since many roads are not meant to be used which makes it difficult for us to check each and every person. But it is our duty and we will do it nonetheless.” Apart from Metro, security has also been strengthened at the entry and exit points like Noida, Badarpur, Akshardham Chowk, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad among several other points where men in khaki are stopping each and every vehicle to ensure no suspicious persons enter the city.
Popular market places like Karol Bagh, Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Rajouri Garden saw local police take the volunteers’ help to assist them in safeguarding and securing the area at places where they cannot reach.
