Delhi Police to focus on ‘home delivery’ of marijuana near DU

Two months after the arrest of a drug dealer and his associates operating from north Delhi’s Sabji Mandi area, Delhi Police is now all set to look into ‘home delivery’ of marijuana in areas around the Delhi University.

The police have lately identified groups on Whatsapp and social networking sites where youths living in and around the campus talk about possibilities of procuring marijuana from different sources.
They also share contacts of peddlers after which the drug can be availed at the doorstep in a cash-on-delivery basis, said a senior police official.

According to a source, the services are available in areas including Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Roop Nagar, Vijay Nagar Single and Double Storeys, Old and New Gupta Colony, Outram Lanes and Indra Vihar.

When Selvam — the alleged drug dealer from Sabji Mandi, who was arrested on 20 September — was interrogated, he too mentioned that peddlers who brought marijuana from him further sold it to youths in some of the aforementioned areas and provided home delivery facilities. ‘When it comes to the campus, the case becomes very sensitive because we are dealing with youths, most of whom are university students. So the best way to deal with the situation is to curb the supply,’ said the senior official.

He further said: ‘The easy access is the problem. So if the supply in and around the campus area is cut, the problem will be solved.’

Another police official, working in the narcotics wing, said it is also a little difficult to nab peddlers from the campus area as they work very surreptitiously.

In fact, Selvam was also arrested from Mori Gate area, where he had a rented room and stored large quantities of ganja, that he used to procure from his native village in Tamil Nadu.

The official added that drugs that have been prevalent in the campus area have always included marijuana and, at times, little quantities of hashish. But a recent recovery of synthetic drugs from a Nigerian, arrested from the campus has made the police sit up.

As opined by senior police officials in the crime branch, this matter should be looked into by the local police as they have better ideas of the places and the people who could be involved.

They can also activate and use their sources to get vital information about their modus operandi and whereabouts which would prove crucial to curb the menace.
