Delhi police question 2 persons from Muzaffarnagar with alleged LeT links

The Delhi police Special Cell is questioning two people from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the arrest of two Lashkar-e-Toiba operatives — Mohammad Shahid and Rashid — arrested from Mewat district in December.

The two suspects were allegedly in touch with the LeT operatives over phone during Muzaffarnagar riots. Sources said the suspects will become police witnesses.

The Delhi police picked up the two suspects last week after telephone records of the Mewat LeT operatives showed that the four were in touch with each other. A well-placed source in the police department said that the two terrorists arrested from Mewat instructed the suspects to arrange weapons to carry out an attack on 4 December in Delhi in the telephone conversation.

‘The calls of the arrested LeT operatives- Mohammad Shahid and Rashid revealed that they were having conversations on two mobile phone numbers that belong to these two suspected persons who are being intensively quizzed,’ a source in the Special Cell said.

The source also said that the interrogation of the terrorists has proved that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was playing a key role in indoctrinating Muzzafarnagar riot victims.

‘During intense quizzing, the suspects have confessed that they were in touch with the LeT operatives. Instead of making them accused, we are planning to produce them before Patiala court as prime witnesses,’ he said.

Speaking to Millennium Post, a highly-placed source in the department said, ‘We have been questioning several persons in connection with the planned terror strike. On the basis of Shahid and Rashid’s interrogation a lot of other people have also been questioned. Although, the planned terror strike on 4 December has been averted by intercepting calls of Javed Baluchi, a top LeT commander, the possibility of conducting another strike is very much there.’

‘Around 30 people have been called to join in the on-going investigation at Special Cell headquarters in Lodi colony. Apart from two specific persons of Muzaffarnagar, who are the main suspects, people from many other districts including Mewat, Palval and Shamli, are also being quizzed,’ a senior officer said.

It is worth mentioning that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had in October said that some ISI agents were in touch with Muzaffarnagar riot victims.
