Delhi Police, NSG clash over confiscated detonators

A recent exchange of letters over diffusion of confiscated detonators revealed the on-going tiff between the Delhi police and National Security Guards (NSG). Following the confiscation of hundreds of detonators by Delhi police’s central district a few months ago, the investigating officers sent a letter to NSG asking them to diffuse them, so that they can send the samples to the forensic laboratory.

However, the furious NSG replied in the negative and blamed Delhi police for not using the police personnel whom they train on regular basis. ‘Delhi police men are trained by NSG for different purposes. Diffusion of detonators is one such program,’ informed a senior police officer.

Sources said in response to the Delhi police letter, NSG said, ‘The Delhi police have enough trained men to execute this task and they should be approached for it.’

It is a matter of embarrassment that Delhi police still couldn’t find men in their own force to do the task. ‘Even though the CBI agreed to diffuse a few detonators, they refused to diffuse all citing work reasons,’ sources claimed.

The detonators in question were acquired by the police in one of the biggest seizures in Delhi made from a Maoist sympathiser in the city. The 42-year-old Nepali citizen was found possessing 498 non-electric detonators and over 27 metres of wires. A chargesheet was recently filed. Special Commissioner of Police, Training, was unavailable for comments.

Senior police officers said that the NSG keeps organising training sessions for Delhi police officials for better quality policing.

‘They train us for anti-terrorism probe and recently NSG trained SWAT team members of the Delhi police to combat 26/11 like incidents,' said the official.
