Delhi police arrest dead councillor’s husband

The Delhi police have arrested the husband of the Congress councillor who was found dead along with her baby daughter on late Thursday night.

He has been booked for dowry harassment. Once the autopsy report is out, the in-laws might be arrested as well. Both the families are being questioned by the police separately.

Additional commissioner of police (west), V Rangnathan said, ‘Pawan Yadav has been arrested on late Thursday night under section-304B (causing dowry death) of Indian Panel Code. He has been sent to police custody.’

A senior police official said, ‘He was presented in a Delhi court, which sent him to police custody for a fortnight till November 23.’ A case of dowry death has been registered against her in-laws, the official added.

Satyam Yadav, 26, of west Delhi’s Nangloi area, was found hanging inside her home around 8 am on Thursday. The body of her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter was lying on the bed.

Satyam, a native of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh, had moved to Delhi in 2010 after her marriage to Pawan Yadav, a teacher in a municipal corporation school.

She had a BEd degree and a Masters degree too, and was a councillor from ward number 43 in Nangloi (East).

Satyam’s family registered a complaint against her relatives in-law, alleging that she was murdered for dowry.

‘The family that Satyam married into had been demanding Rs 10 lakh (as dowry). We went to Delhi to bring her back to Bulandshahr. They refused to let her come and said they will not leave her until their demands were fulfilled,’ said Satyam’s elder brother Nishant Yadav.

Pawan Yadav refuted the dowry allegations and told investigators that his wife was upset over a family issue.

Satyam’s family believe she was murdered; they do not think she committed suicide.
