Delhi MLAs on spending spree get an image make-up before elections

Though there continues to be fluidity about the fate of Delhi assembly, whether it would be dissolved or a government formed, the front-runners for the chief ministerial post from the three parties are working overtime to establish their credentials as effective MLAs. Jagdish Mukhi of the BJP, Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress and Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have emerged as MLAs who have spent maximum amount from the MLA local areas development (MLALAD) fund.

Mukhi is not the only one to have utilised funds from his party, there are others like  MLA from Shahdara, Jitender Singh Shunty and Kirari MLA Anil Jha who spent their entire fund in their constituency. But there are contrasts too. There are three MLAs from BJP-SAD benches who are still to spend a single paisa. These MLAs are Neel Daman Khatri from Narela,  Pawan Sharma from Uttam Nagar, and Harmeet Singh Kalka from Kalkaji. They are joined by veteran Congress leader Jai
Kishan from Sultanpur Mazra and AAP MLAs Ashok Kumar Chauhan from Ambedkar Nagar and Somnath Bharti from Malviya Nagarin the non-spending spree.

Former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has funded closed-circuit cameras in Sarojini Nagar, Bengali Market, Laxmi Bai Nagar, SBS Marg and Baird Lane in his constituency. He has just Rs 87 lakh of the funds remaining as he has spent money on high-cost projects like water filter hydrant and toilets in  slum clusters and parks.

On the other hand his rival from BJP, Jagdish Mukhi has utilised funds for construction of drains and lanes in his Janakpuri constituency. Delhi Congress president Lovely has spent money on construction of five roads and lanes in Seelampur and Gandhi Nagar areas.

Mukhi’s party colleague Rambir Singh Bidhuri, who is alleged to have scouted for defectors from the Congress and the AAP, has almost utilised his funds. So has his neighbour Asif Mohammad Khan from Okhla. Khan is left with Rs 21.03 lakh in his bag.
