Considering the hustle and bustle of the peak-hour commute, the Delhi Metro has begun preparations for the induction of eight-coach trains into its operations. These eight-coach trains have been assembled at the Khyberpass Metro depot, on which various tests and examinations are currently being done. During the non-revenue hours in the night time, these trains are being test-run from Khyberpass to Najafgarh Metro depot and vice versa.
The eight-coach trains would be pressed into services on the busy Noida and Gurgaon corridors that record a combined daily footfall of over 13 lakh commuters.
There are certain stringent ‘type tests’, which are being done on these eight-coach train; various aspects of Metro operations such as signalling, safety, speed pick-up, jerking and breaking are being checked and observed. These tests are expected to continue for another 15 to 20 days. The process of changing the number of coaches of a train involves lot of technical expertise in carrying out the necessary integration and commissioning activities. A team of seven to eight dedicated DMRC engineers and contractors’ engineers carry out several rounds of testing to make it ready for passenger service.
Delhi Metro has already placed orders for procurement of 212 new coaches for the conversion of six-coach and four-coach trains into eight-coach trains. By 2015, all the trains operational on Line 2 [Jahangirpuri – HUDA City Centre] and 3/4 [Dwarka – NOIDA City Centre/Vaishali] would be either six-coach or eight-coach trains. These additional coaches are scheduled to arrive from September onwards and the first eight-coach train is expected to be operational by the end of this year. As per DMRC’s plans, 37 six-coach trains on Line 2 would be converted into eight-coach trains and one Bombardier four-coach train would be converted into six-coach train.
31 four-coach trains of RS1 [Mitsubishi-Rotem-Mitsubishi electrical] on Line 3/4 would be converted into eight-coach trains. Six four-coach trains on Line 2 of RS 1 would be converted into six-coach trains.
