Delhi-Meerut rapid rail project looks for new route

At the 139th board meeting of Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) on Thursday, approval was given to chalk out a new route map for a rapid rail transit system, which will connect Anand Vihar railway station to Meerut city.

The project, which is expected to cost over Rs 22,000 crore, will probably be the longest elevated rail route in the country. Completion of this major infrastructure project will reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to approximately one hour.

‘The new rail route of Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) will run almost parallel to NH-58 but at a distance of 1 to 1.5 km,’ said Santosh Kumar Yadav, chairman of GDA. ‘The new route will boost development in the area as it will reduce travel time between western Uttar Pradesh and the national capital’, he added.

The authority had earlier proposed the rail route along NH-58 but the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) contended that the project was not feasible, as NH-58 is too narrow to accommodate huge pillars. ‘The entire rail route will be elevated and supported by pillars. It will go along wide roads constructed by GDA under the Master Plan and agricultural land will be acquired for rest of the stretch,’ Yadav said.

As per plan the proposed route will originate from Anand Vihar Railway station and it will run along the road to Mohan Nagar. It will then cross Hindon River and the route is then expected to pass through the backyards of small towns like Rajnagar Extension, Murad Nagar and Modi Nagar situated along NH-58, before entering Meerut city. The last station will be at Dhaurala, situated at the other end of Meerut. The rail route, which will cover a distance of approximately 90 kms, will have 15 stations, of which seven will fall within the jurisdiction of GDA. ‘The cost of land acquisition will be borne jointly by GDA and Meerut Development Authority (MTA). We have written to the Uttar Pradesh government to finalise the modalities of cost sharing,’ Yadav said.

‘To cover the entire route, it will take 70 minutes,’ said MC Gaur, town planner of GDA. ‘Presently, it takes around 2.5 to 3.0 hours to cover this distance,’ he added.

GDA close to an agreement with DJB

Ghaziabad:
GDA is planning to enter into an agreement with Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for the provision of water to its new townships. ‘DJB is laying a new pipeline of 270 cusecs capacity, which will pass close to Rajnagar Extension, Rajender Nagar, Loni and Mohan areas. We have requested them to lay a pipe line of 320 cusecs capacity and the revenue will be shared among GDA and DJB. The response is very encouraging,’ said Santosh Yadav, GDA chairman.
