Delhi, learn to kick and punch for free today

It’s been more than a month since the horrific gangrape incident shook the nation. And it’s not that crime against women in the Rape Capital has stopped.

While the government has been doing whatever it has been doing, self-defence classes seem to be on top of everyone’s list. Little wonder then that a large number of self-defence camps have sprung up. One such initiative for a self-defence camp has been taken by a city-based group which is offering classes for free for men and women today.

Their two-month campaign, that starts today, is dedicated to make people self-reliant. The basic agenda is to teach some basic as well as advanced self-defence techniques. ‘Our motto is to make all women and men safe and self-sufficient. We chose 26 January to begin so that we can play a part in building a safe nation,’ says Divyu Gupta, vice president, Endzone, the organisers of the camp.

The training includes some basic strikes, advanced strikes, knowledge of weapon, escape and evasion tactics as well as some yoga and meditative processes that help in controlling the mind and staying calm under stress and difficult situations.

‘Our self-defence training is reality and scenario based. We will teach how to get out of difficult situations that might arise in real life. We teach how to use weapons for fending off an attacker. The course will help you become more alert and also increase your self confidence,’ says trainer Rahul Bhasin.

‘Self-defence should always be encouraged,’ says Dr Ranjana Kumari, director,  Centre for Social Research. So get kicking!
