Delhi HC allows media to cover 16 December gang rape trial

In camera proceedings in the fast-track court hearing the 16 December gang rape case ended on Friday with the media allowed conditional access to cover the trial. As the Delhi High Court allowed coverage of the case, the fast-track court sought the response of the prosecution on a plea of a accused seeking bail to meet his personal commitments. Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna, who is exclusively dealing with the cases of sexual offences, cautioned reporters about adhering to conditions mentioned in the High Court order.

In another development, the Supreme Court on Friday stayed the Delhi High Court’s order which had allowed the plea of 16 December gangrape accused to use as evidence a CD containing the interview of the victim’s male friend given to a news channel. A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir stayed the 7 March order after Delhi Police submitted that the TV interview is per se inadmissible. The high court had allowed the plea of accused Ram Singh, who allegedly committed suicide in Tihar jail recently, and his brother Mukesh and had set aside the trial court’s order by which they were not allowed to exhibit the CD of the interview as evidence.
