Delhi HC adjourns cases, as lawyers strike work

Work at the Delhi High Court was severely affected on Monday, as lawyers abstained from work in protest against a recent decision to hike the pecuniary jurisdiction of the High Court from Rs 1 Crore to Rs 2 Crore.

There were no lawyers in most of the courtrooms to argue the cases and many cases were adjourned because of the strike. Hassled litigants appeared before the courts and were seen taking adjournments in their respective matters.

The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) office-bearers manned the entry points to the court premises and asked their colleagues not to appear before the judges.

DHCBA is protesting the recent decision of chief justice D Murugesan to enhance the pecuniary jurisdiction limits of the law suits to be heard by the high court from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore, and the lawyers feel it will take away work as many cases will be transferred to the lower courts.
