Delhi has the means and moolah too!

With assembly elections in the city just a year away, the Delhi government got a shot in its arms as the 37th issue of Delhi Statistical Handbook-2012 pointed towards a vibrant and forward moving economy in the city with per capita income touching Rs 1,75,812 in 2011-12 with Rs 25,159 over the last year figures. In the per capita income national average Delhi comes second to Goa.

Per capita income, which indicates an average earning of a person, has Goa topping the list with Rs 1,92,652 topping the list while Chandigarh stands the third after Delhi with Rs 1,40,073. The national average has been worked out at Rs 60,972.

Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit releasing the Handbook said, ‘The overall literacy in Delhi was 86.34 percent with male literacy of 91.03 per cent and female 80.93 per cent’.

As per the data, a total of 33,40,538 families are staying in Delhi out of which 68 per cent have their own houses whereas 29 per cent are putting up in rented accommodation. At least 30 per cent families are putting up in two-room accommodation. Around 44 per cent households have four members in their families while 20.4 per cent have five members and 7.6 per cent comprise two members.

According to the statistics, 20.7 per cent households have their own cars, whereas, 99.1 per cent households have electricity connections while tapped water supply is available to 81.33 per cent houses.

An official from Delhi Jal Board says, ‘Every Delhiite consumes 50 gallons per day with 39,930 un-metered connections. The generation of water in Delhi was 847 MGD in 2012’.

The handbook also states that Delhiites are habitual to enjoy and make use of available entertainment opportunities. Over 88 percent households are having TV sets whereas Delhi keeps on rushing to theatres to watch movies everyday. There are 154 cinemas, theatres and multiplexes in Delhi offering 510 average shows per day.

It has been stated in the handbook that around 98,000 persons visits theatres daily. The consumption of 2.40 crore cases of Indian Made Foreign Liquor, country liquor and Indian bear together has been recorded during 2011-12. The capital is also witnessing a mobile revolution, with cell phone connections increasing at an incredible rate. There are 4.25 crore mobile phones in the city against its population of around 1.70 crore, implying that on an average every Delhi’ite has at least two phones. Whereas, the number of fixed line phone connections in Delhi has also risen marginally from 28.38 lakh in 2010-11 to 29.12 lakh in 2011-2012.

Around 5.1 lakh vehicles were registered during 2010-11 taking the total number to 74.38 lakh vehicles against 69.32 lakh in 2010-11. As per the report, there are 886 hospitals with 43,504 beds in Delhi as on 31 December, 2011. There are 187 maternity and child welfare centers and 1,019 dispensaries functional in Delhi.
