Delhi has 73% less than sanctioned Urdu teachers

The Sheila Dikshit government might have declared Urdu as Delhi’s second official language, but the language is not getting the attention it deserves, especially in the field of education. Over 73 per cent of posts for Urdu teachers are lying vacant in the Delhi government’s Directorate of Education. Of the total 262 Urdu teachers’ posts sanctioned by the directorate, only 70 posts have been filled up, leaving 192 posts vacant.

This was revealed in a Right to Information(RTI) report. However, it is not just the posts for Urdu teachers that are lying vacant. According to the RTI report, the Delhi government's Directorate of Education has a total of 29,444 sanctioned posts, out of which only 19,675 posts have been filled, leaving 9,769 posts vacant. These figures are as of January, 2013. The chairman of the Delhi Minority Commission, Safder Hussain Khan, has repeatedly praised the  Delhi government for appointing 284 teachers who know Urdu, across 284 Delhi government schools, which have at least 6 Muslims students. However, Delhi Urdu Academy staff said that only 20 Urdu teachers have been appointed on temporary basis.
