Delhi Gymkhana Club celebrates centenary

The Delhi Gymkhana Club celebrated its 100th year on Sunday with Vice President Hamid Ansari inaugurating its centenary celebrations at a gathering of its members here.

Ansari, who became a member of the country’s oldest club in 1962, wished the centre will continue to contribute to the nation through its various distinguished members.

‘This club is not only a gathering of people who more or less think alike and decide to spend time in each other’s company, but this gathering is also associated with history of New Delhi. This is very much the part of the history of New Delhi,’ he said.

Known as Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club during the British era, the club was constructed in 1913 soon after New Delhi was made capital of the country.

‘From 1913 to 2013 (the club) is almost synonymous with the decision to build a new capital and over the years the club has contributed its share through its distinguished members to the life of the nation,’ the Vice President said.

A light and sound show was also organised showcasing the history of the club and its transformation since the British era till today.
