Identifying proliferation of unsafe buildings in the city as a major challenge, Delhi Government has come out with a broad policy under which potentially weak buildings will be surveyed and retrofitted in a phased manner.
Civic agencies will first conduct vulnerability assesment of weak buildings in various localities across the city in a phased manner and based on the studies, necessary follow up action would be taken.
The broad policy guidelines to deal with the problem was highlighted in a seminar titled 'Seismic Safety Assessment of Buildings in Delhi by Rapid Visual Screening' which was attended by top officials of various concerned agencies, besides Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna.
Officials said the National Disaster Management Authority will soon train 300 engineers on structural safety measures who will then be able to identify potentially unsafe and weak buildings in the city. The training programme will start later this week with a batch of 50 engineers.
Expressing concern over growing number of unsafe buildings in the city, Khanna suggested setting up of a separate agency to carry out retrofitting and reconstruction of unsafe buildings.
He said thousands of buildings in Delhi, especially in East Delhi, are very unsafe.
