Delhi government on Thursday released Rs 60 lakh to National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED), for improvements in the supply of onions and potatoes in across city. The arrival of onions and potatoes are more than the requirement of the city, according to government officials.
‘We have released money to NAFED to purchase onion and potato from wholesale markets in other states- where ever these vegetables are available,’ said an official statement. Currently the city government is selling onions and potatoes at cheaper rates in 40 premises and from Thursday the number of premises will increase to 300. Despite the steep hike, the government is claiming stability in vegetable prices.
‘The wholesale and retail prices of these essential commodities are also stable. While the wholesale prices of onions was from Rs 13 to Rs 25 per kg, the retail prices in various locations of cities has varied from Rs 16 per kg to Rs 30 per kg,’ SS Yadav, commissioner, Food and Civil Supplies Department said. ‘The onions are being sold today at Rs 27 per kg and potatoes at Rs 24.50 kg in SAFAL outlets,’ added Yadav. ‘Fifty-two teams consisting officials from Department of Food and Supply and Delhi Police conducted these raids against hoarding of onions, potatoes, edible oil and other basic essential commodities,’ SS Yadav, commissioner, Food and Civil Supply Department said in a statement.
The raiding parties also unearthed a massive illegal stock of pulses and rice and recovered 18,000 quintals of food grains. ‘The stock has been confiscated and FIR under Essential Commodities Act, 1955 has been lodged. The Lieutenant Governor has directed that such strict action against the hoarders shall be continued in future and no person involved in hoarding, profiteering and cheating people shall be spared,’ he added.
