Leader of Opposition in Delhi Vidhan Sabha Vijay Kumar Malhotra blamed the Delhi government for not making sincere efforts to clean Yamuna river. He also emphasised on the need to cover the drains in the city and treat water before discharging in the river.
‘In mid 70s, Thames river passing through London was one of the most dirtiest rivers but now they have made it one of the cleanest rivers of the world. Despite wasting over Rs 12,000 crore of public money, Yamuna in Delhi has become 10 times dirtier since the project of cleanig the river was started in mid 90s,’ said Vijay Kumar Malhotra, while inagurating a project of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) to cover the Tilak Nagar drain in west Delhi.
According to a affidavit submitted by various government agencies and states, a total of Rs 12,000 crore have been spent on Yamuna cleaning project of which Delhi government alone has expended Rs 2,072 crore since 1994. An additional Rs 140 crore was spent by New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Rs 175 crore by the MCDs. According to environment experts there is no ‘clean water’ in Yamuna.
‘It high time for the government agencies to make the treatment of water of drains mandatory before discharging in the river and cover the drains in the city. Sewerage treatment plant, purification of water and beautification of Delhi’s lifeline, Yamuna, is the need of hour,’ added Malhotra.
This 2.9 km covering of drain project in Tilak Nagar area would cost around Rs 85 crore and will be completed within 36 months.
‘We will cover all the drains of SDMC gradually. The project is being funded from the money the Delhi government has given to the corporation on a loan of over 13 per cent interest. However, we are trying to wade through our financial crisis and simultanesously fulfil the expectations of public,’ said Subhash Arya, Leader of House in SDMC.
