Delhi govt moves to make Annashree broad-based

The Delhi government on Wednesday decided to make the Dilli Annashree Yojana more broad-based in order to ensure benefits for a greater number of vulnerable households.
The proposal seeks to relax the eligibility criteria for the scheme.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Speaking to media after the meeting, Dikshit said, ‘The scheme was a sincere effort made by the government to ensure food security in the capital city.’

Under the new rules, all households whose head has been a resident of Delhi since 1 January, 2010, and has an annual family income of less than Rs 1 lakh is eligible for benefits under the scheme. The beneficiary should also not be getting ration under the Public Distribution System (PDS). People would become eligible for claiming benefits with effect from 1 April, 2013 if the meet the aforementioned criteria.

Under Dilli Annashree Yojana, Rs 600 will be provided as food subsidy per month to needy households. The cash transfers will be made to the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of the senior most female of families.

Benefits under the scheme cannot be claimed if the household is drawing ration through PDS.
A survey conducted by Mission Convergence, an NGO, suggests that around 5.7 lakh households will benefit from the relaxation of eligibility norms.

Prior to this, on 16 April the Cabinet decided to extend the benefit under the scheme to widows getting pension from government and up to 500 vulnerable families per circle based on recommendations of the circle vigilance committee.
