Delhi govt likely to take over EDMC

The Aam Aadmi Party government is likely to seek the reign of the cash-strapped East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) from the Centre, aiming to improve upon the financial condition of the civic body.

According to a senior government official, as per Section 490 of MCD Act 1957, the Centre can hand over the administrative works of the EDMC to Delhi government if the corporation is financially unviable and failing to fulfill its responsibility.

Blaming BJP for the financial crisis in the municipal corporations, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 25, had also asked the party to resign and hand over charge to AAP, claiming to turn the situation over within a year.

“We are planning to write to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung to hand over the charge of EDMC as the civic body has completely failed to fulfill its responsibility and pay salaries to the staff.
