Delhi food and civil supplies minister, Haroon Yusuf on Monday hit out at the BJP over contentions raised by the opposition party against the food security scheme. He said that 32 lakh people eligible under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), those below poverty line (BPL), Jhughi Ration Card (JRC) and Resettlement Colony Ration Card (RCRC) categories are getting their ration under the ambit of National Food Security Act from September, 2013.
He said that the beneficiaries have received food grains as per their entitlement for the month of September at revised rates of Rs 2 per kg for wheat and Rs 3 per kg for rice.
Delivery of food grains to Fair Price Shops (FPSs) for distribution in the month of October 2013 has also commenced.
Process of identification of other eligible households has begun, Yusuf said. He added that so far 40 lakh application forms have been distributed through ration offices, Gender Resource Centres (GRCs), offices of district magistrates, SDMs and MLAs.
The department has made elaborate arrangements to receive applications in 200 offices, i.e. 70 ration offices and 130 GRCs. On an average 50,000 applications are being received daily.
Food supply minister has stated that over 9 lakh households (i.e. over 40 lakh people) have already submitted complete application forms to ration offices/GRCs.
‘To make people aware of the application process and the documents required and to prevent their harassment, the department has taken up an awareness drive through newspapers, radio jingle, as well as through public announcements by 140 auto rickshaws throughout the city,’ said Yusuf.
Food and civil supplies commissioner SS Yadav said that 200 hoardings have also been installed at various locations. The NGOs working with ‘Mission Convergence’ have been provided with applications forms for door to door distribution. They will also help the people in filling up and submitting the application forms, he added.
The quality of food grains received from FCI godowns is being strictly monitored. The managers of Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation (DSCSC) posted at these godowns have been asked to ensure that only delivery of quality food grains are taken in. Inspection of Fair Price Shops has been increased manifold to monitor quality of food grains and their distribution at new rates to the consumers. Each senior officer and assistant commissioner has been asked to inspect 20 shops daily.
