Delhi govt gives nod to Kalindi Kunj-Faridabad bypass road

After a ten-year delay, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has given his assent to construct the Kalindi Kunj-Faridabad bypass road.

In 2004, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had laid the foundation stone for this project and half the work was done. Delhi government’s Public Works Department had already spent at least Rs 50 crore in the project.

A senior Delhi government official, during a meeting of Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) few days back, said that the LG had given his nod to the project.

Now a consultant company is studying the project. Final details from this study will be sent to the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC) to initiate the process of floating a tender for construction. The consulting company has been asked to prepare and submit details of expenditure for this project.

According to the plan, the proposed bypass road will ascend from DND toll bridge, opposite Kilokri Colony area, as a single pillar elevated road till Badarpur area, on the banks of river Yamuna. The road will descend at Badarpur and then another flyover has been proposed to cross a small canal in the area. After it enters Haryana, the road will be joined by the 28 km stretch, which has already been constructed by the state government.

‘The total length of this bypass road will be 42 km. Delhi government has to construct a 14 km-long road, as the rest of the stretch (28 km) has already been constructed by the Haryana government. The length of the elevated road will be 6 km,’ said a senior Delhi government official.

The project was prepared in 2004. However many residential areas had fallen on the proposed route. Many people raised objection as densely populated areas like Jamia Nagar had fallen right in the middle of the route and it required a series of demolitions. To avoid any new bridge on the river Yamuna, which was objected by many environment activists, officials have planned to construct a flyover parallel to the river. Now the estimated cost of the project is Rs 200 crore and it will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, the stretch from Maharani Bagh to Kalindi Kunj will be constructed. The second phase will include the stretch from Kalindi Kunj to Faridabad.

The proposed bypass will ease traffic on NH-2 (Delhi-Mathura road) and it will benefit the commuters of Fridabad, Delhi and Noida.
