Delhi govt asks top cop for report on racist attacks

On the heels of number of incidents against residents from the Northeast and Africa, the government has asked the police to clarify its stand in the matter.

In a letter to Bassi on Friday, Srivastava asked him to submit the report as soon as possible. ‘Apart from the action taken report, the government has also asked the police to submit a detailed plan to prevent such incidents in the future,’ said a senior Delhi government official.

Sources say that the Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung is not happy with the slow pace of investigation in cases related to such racist attacks. ‘In recent cases, the police have failed to act swiftly on such complaints. In the case related to Nido Tania’s death, the police officials had asked him for a settlement rather than registering a FIR,’ the official added.

The chief secretary will directly monitor the police’s action on racist attacks and more such reports will be asked for frequently. The government also wants police to act swiftly on racist remarks too.
‘The government wants the police to take strict action against those who pass racist remarks.

Details of sensitisation programmes have also been sought. If any police official was found showing lax in taking action on such racist remarks or attacks, strict action should be taken against him,’ he added.
