Delhi government on Wednesday asked the Centre to expedite amendment in the Motor Vehicles’ Act and also install weigh-in-motion systems at the entry points of National Highways in Delhi as per directed by National Green Tribunal, even as the state government has stepped up effort to decide on an action plan for the implementation of the NGT order which has called for banning diesel vehicles older than 10 years.
Seeking an appointment with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Gadkari and transport ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to resolve the vexed issue, Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai said: “In the light of the order of the NGT the amendment has become necessary in the Motors Vehicles Act which comes in the domain of Central government.”
It is important to mention that in a recent NGT order has banned plying of all the vehicles in Delhi older than 15 years and diesel vehicles not older than 10 years, however the Motor’s Vehicle Act allows national permit to diesel vehicles up to 12 years old.
Besides, the tribunal has also directed to take action against overloaded vehicles which requires installation of weighing machines at entry points.
