Delhi gang rape case sentencing on Friday

A fast track court after hearing the arguments of prosecution and defence in the 16 December gang rape case deferred the order on sentence on four convicts – Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Akshay Thakur – to Friday. The court had, on Tuesday, held them guilty on the charges of murder, attempt to murder, gangrape, destruction of evidence and various other charges of the IPC.

The prosecution argued before the Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna that the gang rape and murder was ‘the rarest of rare case’ and deserved death for their barbaric behaviour which shocked the conscience of the country.

It said the crime is not only grotesque and diabolic in nature but the barbaric behaviour of the convicts was of the highest kind and there is no chance of reformation of people like these. The defence pleaded for leniency saying the accused had no crime history.
