Over thousands gathered in protest after a seven-year-old girl was hospitalised after allegedly being raped at the North Delhi Municipal Corporation school she attends in the Mangolpuri area in north-west Delhi. Protestors gathered outside the hospital where the minor is hospitalised on Friday afternoon and threw stones and bricks damaging several buses, police PCR vans and shops in the area. Police used lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse them. Four policemen were injured in the clashes. Cops have detained at least 12 people and registered a case of rioting and destroying public property.
The commissioner has order an internal inquiry in the incident. The inquiry commitee consists of four members, additional commissioner Pawan Sharma, chairman Deepak Purohit, DOV Jas Ram Kaim, additional director (education) Amit Saxena. CMO commitee to has been told to inquire and submit report at the earliest.
Demanding swift action against the culprits, residents of Mangolpuri staged a three-hour demonstration outside the local police station on Friday morning, leading to traffic chaos in the area. Police had to use batons to disperse the crowds. Some policemen and locals were injured in the incident.
The situation turned violent again on Friday afternoon when the residents gathered, this time outside the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where the girl was being treated, and started pelting stones, damaging three Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses and some police vehicles. A police contingent has been posted in the area.
As protests spread, the gates of the hospital had to be closed for sometime. The protesters alleged police were not actively pursuing the case and arresting the culprits. The hospital officials said the girl was stable and was sent home after the examination at around 4 pm, and the reports have been handed over to the family.
'Over thousands of people gathered to demand swift action against the culprits. Many NGO activists also arrived at the spot and joined the protest along with the locals. Angry protesters damaged a DTC bus outside the hospital. School staff are being questioned in the case,' said a police official, adding, 'The whole area near the MCD school in Mangolpuri and the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital has been cordoned off. Around 500 policemen have been deployed in the area to control the mob,' said an officer. No arrests have been made yet in the case, but a case of rape has been registered and the school guard and two male teachers been detained for questioning.
Condemning the rape, NCW chairpeson Mamta Sharma said incidents like these are on the rise and unless tough punishment is incorporated, the mindset of offenders will not change. The girl is a student of Class II in a primary school run by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Her family has said in a police complaint that she was raped on Thursday afternoon. The police have sought the help of a non-government organisation to counsel the child as they try to get more details from her about the incident.
There were widespread protests for days in Delhi after the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old medical student in December 2012.
