Party leaders are allegedly distributing free spirit to keep their voters in high spirits and win their support.
‘We are receiving complaints from all over the city. Teams are, however, being sent on complaints that give the details of where exactly the distribution is taking place,’ said Ankur Garg, nodal officer to the office of chief electoral officer of Delhi. ‘So far, we have registered 357 police complaints related to liquor distribution,’ added Garg.
Tuesday and Wednesday have been declared as dry days by the Election Commission, however, politicians have found innovative ways of reaching out to the voters with booze.
According to sources, in some areas voters or their group leaders are being given dummy ballot papers with numbers written over a particular election symbol while some leaders are distributing currency notes to fetch bottles from particular locations. People can collect bottles from the specified locations by producing the ballot papers or currency notes.
‘In our area local leaders who claim to have a bulk of votes in their kitty were provided currency notes with denominations of Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50. The man at the specified location will give liquor bottles based on the value of the note or the number mentioned on the ballot paper,’ said Mayank Singh a youth in Madanpur Khadar area.
‘The areas of Punarvas Camp in Madanpur Khadar and Rajasthani Basti in Okhla are being combed after the information of booze and money distribution was received,’ informed Garg.
The chief electoral officer Vijay Dev said that officers have been directed to take strict action against such complaints in their areas.
