Delhi EC gears up to tackle cyber attacks during polls

The Electoral Office is planning to bolster up anti-hacking tools and set up multiple back-up data base at unidentified locations in case of any cyber attack during the upcoming Parliamentary elections.

A senior Delhi electoral officer said the website of chief electoral officer of the city (CEO Delhi) is under the constant threat of these hackers and several incidents have been reported in the past.

‘The plan is to intensify tools to tackle hacking. Experts are preparing a strong firewall to avert any cyber attack. Dubai-based and Chinese hackers attack the Delhi’s electoral website right at the time of vote counting to disrupt the live counting system,’ he said.

Setting up separate databases at unidentified locations will help officials in continuing their service uninterrupted.

‘The Election Commission of India has specifically asked the Delhi election office to create such systems as there were many incidents reported in the past. In last year’s Assembly elections, some hackers attacked website. However, our experts averted these problems. However, it did lead to a delay in the live counting service for one or two hours,’ he added.

The officials will set up servers in other cities such as Noida, Gurgaon, Bangalore and Hyderabad at unidentified locations. The backup servers will be provide a real-time up gradation of data during voting and counting. If any group of hackers attacks at the website, cyber experts will be pressed into service to hold them and simultaneously a real time backup system will be activated for uninterrupted service.

‘If the hackers attack again, the other backup will be used to continue live updates,’ he added.
